  • Thank you so much Annie, your post was really useful. I have never taken cuttings from fuschias - never sure when to try so I am going to do that this weekend now.

By the way, I saw you over on Weezls fantastic thread - we were both extolling the virtues of the Greenfingered board. ;)
To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.

    Thankyou Annie123

Have just got an allotment this week, so am searching around for what to put in it at this time of year.

At the moment its just a bare plot of land, so Ive got all the fencing to do as well - - if only it would stop raining so hard!!

Off to track down some free wood for raised beds, etc.

Thankyou again for some wonderful ideas :T :T

Annie, I love the idea of planting mini daffodils and hyacinths, freesias etc to make christmas presents! I would never have thought of doing it until it was too late so thank you! :T Is a shed okay as a 'cool room'? And can I use normal garden compost in the containers?

yes, I've put mine in the shed before...no room now full of useful stuff  still waiting for dh to provide a bigger shed, so far only large plot of cleared garden!

I use normal garden compost but before giving as present sometimes add some pea shingle/gravel on the earth, makes it look neater.

Hello Annie, here I am over to see you!

I thought I would break my duck with a question. I have some lovely toms in the greenhouse that some pale green caterpillars on them. I haven't seen them before last year, when we moved here. They scoffed lots of leaves and green toms last year, so thi syear I've been looking out for them and they are back . I have removed as many as I can see, and (gently) shake the plants each day, sometimes some drop off.

Anyone got any idea what they are? And how I can stop them coming back. I tried keeping some in a jamjar last year with a perforated lid and some fresh leaves every day to see what they grew into so I could identify them, but they didn't survive

re taking seeds off aquilegia, of which I have tons in the back gdn and none in the front--how exactly do you take seeds ?
lastly (thankgod lol) living 1000ft on moors in scotland, are there any veg I can plant now ? Husband just cleared a plot for me yesterday and I'm all keen to do something with it ! :)

    Hi Mardatha :hello:
Pop the fuchsias cuttings into damp compost.

the seeds are small, you cut the flower stalk pop it straight into a paper bag and wait a few days for it to dry out, the seeds should fall put when the bag is given a shake. Works for most seeds.

    re planting where you live.
I am hoping someone Scottish comes to the rescue here!!
I will give it some thought and rummage around a few books..................off to get glass of wine to accompany said research:D
