Hi
I am currently on Incapacity Benefit for long term illness, so every penny really counts, in addition I get very easily confused with monet matters, so any advice would be a great help.
I am currently with Eon - dual fuel standard tariff. I pay £100 pcm by phone (going up to £124 nxt month).
When I paid last month (20 June), the tariff protection was promoted to me at £5.44 pcm. Being unsure, I have taken some time to try to understand this, and switching, but gave up. After the recent MSE email to cap ASAP I decided I would go with the offer from Eon.
When I phoned this morning I was informed that capping now will cost me more than double what I was told, about £12.75 pcm. Reason being cost of capping went up at the beginning of July. Basically £70 a year more than I was quoted and £153 a year more on top of my current bill.
So I give up, do I go for this? or just continue to bury my head in the sand as I usually do?
Capping stikes me as very immoral, basically gambling, and as always the poor and not so bright just continue to be penalised.

You say you are paying £100 now which is due to increase to £124 but I presume this is not due to any EON price increase. EDF have already announced a large increase which works out at roughly 20% increase acroos the 2 fuels. If EON do the same your £124 will increase by about £24. On that basis paying £12.75 is going to save you about £11. What you need to check is how long the price is capped for and what if any increase you may incur. Hope that helps you.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
