Name change on passport

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but didn't know where else!

I got married last month and just getting sorted now with all the name changes, but when I looked into my passport I have to apply for a new one? For £72?!!! I wouldn't mind as much if my passport was running out, but I’ve got over 6 years left on it! I was wondering if anyone knows if I have to change my name on it. As long as I book in my maiden name will I be ok to travel?

Thanks!

I heard there's something that lets you travel like that for honeymoons etc - you just have to provide your marriage certificate along with the passport...Don't think it works for all countries, though, and I don't know how long after the wedding it works for...

use the same passport until it runs out.in any case not every woman takes her husband's name when they're married

  • Hey,

Thanks for the advice, Yeah changing names on everything is a pain! Bank was first as it was easy to do, National Insurance is the hardest! I can't find someone to contact to tell them! I have been married for just under 2 months now. Think i'm going to just use my existing passport and book all holidays abroad in my maiden name. Really who is going to know?! :T

I know I can always turn to MSE :money:

You don't HAVE to change your name when you marry, in fact you can legally use both your married and maiden names at the same time (I do!). So long as the name on the ticket matches the name on your passport you are good to travel. To be honest I wouldn't risk booking tickets in your married name and relying on taking your marriage cert with you as there are fewer and fewer countries that are accepting this and they will never guarantee it.
  • No I won't risk booking in my married name, that could ruin a holiday! I booked and travelled in my maiden name on the honeymoon, but all the staff called us by our married names anyway.

I was just looking into holidays for next year, with the recent excitment in my life (getting married, moving, starting a new job, graduating) i was feeling a bit down now its all over!

I can see why they call it a honeymoon now! I don't think we can afford to go back there

    Very true.
I have more than a few clients who have retained their maiden name for business purposes and have left their passport in that name.

I'm getting married on Friday. We had to get OH a passport as he's never had one, and couldn't afford to get two so I'm using my maiden name to travel. As long as the name on the tickets matches your passport you should be ok.

Legally, it's perfectly OK to retain your maiden name, However friends have experienced some difficulty in certain Islamic countries (Turkey & Tunisia) when booking in to hotels as independent travellers. Never a problem on package hols though. Certainly not possible to Saudi Arabia of course, but it's not a holiday destination.

We got married in May last year but Mrs Baker only got a passport in her married name in January this year. She waited until she was within 9 months of the expiry of her old one as she then got an extra 9 months on top of the standard 10 years on her new one. She travelled on her old one several times after we'd got married.

We haven't changed our bank accounts yet either!
