Questions about Switching

I know these may sound like dumb questions, but I've got a reason for asking them - honest!
I live in SW Scotland, an area served by Scottish Power - and they are my current elec provider. If there's a power cut (and you can guarantee that there's at least one each winter!) I contact Scottish Power and they turn out and fix it.
If I switch to, say, British Gas, what happens about power cut type problems? Do you have to contact the third party (British Gas) who then pass the problem to Scottish Power to deal with? Or do you still ring Scottish Power?
The reason I'm asking is that I made bad decision with Broadband. I took a 3rd party broadband provider and my pal down the road went with BT. He gets a technician on his doorstep at least three days quicker than I do - which is why I'm asking about power before jumping!
Basically I like the idea of saving 30% but don't want to find that I'm stuck without power a lot longer than I would have been if I was to stay a Scottish Power customer.
(I'm actually also curious about meter reading. Currently - no pun intended - a wee man from Scottish Power comes each quarter and reads the meter. I'm assuming that if I change to the British Gas on line one, I just take the readings myself and input them each quarter, do I?)

I'm by no means an expert but I believe your electricity distributer will be Scottish Piower whereas your supplier is whoever you have a contract with and therefore takes your money.
It should not be a surprise but none of this really affects the wiggly amps that come down the wire.
If you are going to have a power cut it makes no difference who your contract is with (unless you didn't pay the bill  )
Look in your phone book and it will tell you who to call - its probably Scottish Power from what you've said.
BTW if you are quick it appears their fixed til Aug 09 deals are pretty hard tyo beat.0
