Shower won't turn off!

This morning I turned on my electric non-power shower as normal. It "coughed" and then the water came on as usual but then wouldn't turn off when I turned the dial to off. In then end I had to turn the isolation valve to turn it off. It is out of warranty and the company who supplied it want £95 to fix it (fixed fee) and wait a week. Does it sound like this is a simple task I could try to fix myself or best left to them. [I live in a hard water area too if that's important]

We had something like that happen to us at Christmas, DH is pretty good at this sort of thing, and couldn't fix the shower, so had to replace it.
