I'm currently with British Gas and eON energy. After reading Martin's email about capping energy tariffs, I checked on Moneysupermarket and the cheapest capped rate I can get is with Scottish Power at a saving of £113 off my current spend fixed till Aug 2009. Compare that to a non-fixed saving of £591 with nPower. That's a hell of a difference and would mean that nPower would need to increase their prices by around 37% over the year before I'm worse off. Any thoughts?

You would SAVE £591 per year by swopping to npower ?? there isnt a tariff out there that will do that mate....

Well acording to Moneysupermarket there is. My combined bills for Gas and electric with BG and eOn for the last four bills come to £1890 and the comparison site tells me my combined bill with nPower will be £1,299 paying by monthly direct debit. Maybe its because I've never changed and that I'm currently paying when I receive quarterly bills.

Alone for that saving you should switch. Not sure about the capped though. I am not capping.

We have capped our bills. But that's because being certain that our bills aren't going to go through the roof is more important that being sure that we're on the cheapest tarrif. Its a personal decision dictated by your circumstances.

I've just switched to Scottish Powers fixed 'til August 2009 tariff.

All the information on this site regarding 'capping' etc. state its usually 2-3 years i believe. None of the currently available offers found via energyhelpline etc. seem to have this sort of duration available now. Looks to me like fixing for 12 months or so is about as good as it gets at the moment.

We've been with npower for some time. I've had my calculator out comparing the information from the last quarterly bill with the tariff i believe i've just signed up to with Scottish Power.

The totals for our combined gas / electricity for the past quarter on our previous npower tariff compares to the new Scottish Power tariff like this:

    Scottish Power Total: £336.17
    Npower Total: £428.15

So it looks to me this new capped tariff i'm moving to is cheaper than the tariff I was previously on with npower.

i was going to cap, but didnt bother. As i dont know how cheap scottish power are for me (as its my first time paying the bills) and they wanted 50 quid to leave the contract earlier. so didnt bother.

from the figures they gave me on the phone, it was 38% more expensive for my usage anyway.

Just been looking at capped rates, as we've never switched I thought we could make good savings. We can save a grand total of £10 a year by changing to Scottish Power, on their "Online Fixed Price 2009 No Standing Charge" tariff. When the cap comes to an end (Aug 09), is it likely that there will be another capped tariff available then, or will our bills suddenly go up by a large amount when the tariff ends?
