ELECTRICAL GOODS SHUN INFLATION
Comet reports an average of 57% deflation across high end gadgets
Whilst the cost of living rockets with record inflation, electrical goods are bucking the trend and are now more affordable than ever before.
Official figures from electrical specialist Comet show that over the last two years the price of luxury consumer goods including TV's, PCs, laptops and digital cameras' has significantly decreased while the specification of all products has increased.
With a 42" Philips Plasma TV going on sale at Comet tomorrow (Saturday 26 July) for the lowest ever price in the UK at £499.99 - 64% less than the price two years ago - the consumer can take advantage of amazing bargains on the high street.
As well as TVs, incredible savings can be found on camcorders, computers and MP3 players. A Toshiba 80GB High Definition camcorder is now available at £299 - a 75% decrease from the average launch price of £1,200 two years ago. An Acer laptop with significantly higher memory and storage capabilities has deflated 46% to £269.99 from £499.99 in 2006. Similarly a HP PC with a significantly higher spec is now available in-store for just £399 - 53% lower than 2 years ago. The 4GB iPod nano retailed at £179 three years ago and is now just £99 - a 45% decrease.
Bob Darke, Commercial Director at Comet comments: "The price of electricals has come down considerably whilst the choice and quality in our stores increases all the time. With our volume of purchase we continue to drive prices down and endeavour to keep them low. At a time when inflation is set to continue rising this can only be good news for our customers."

Looks an excellent price, but you can't help wondering if prices are going to keep falling at the rate they seem to have lately. Will this set be £450 or less in the next three months?0

Great price, but reflects that this is slightly "old hat" as it is 720p HD ( HD Ready) and that has been overtaken by 1080p "must have" HD tvsac's lovechild0

Seems just like an advert for Comet to me, as mentioned above same price at JL with 5 year warranty thrown in
Do we report it as spam :rotfl:0 -

Well nobody broadcasts in 1080P, or is likely to in the foreseeable future, so it doesn't really matter to most people.
I have this TV, it is the best picture quality on SD that I have seen on any TV, I am not even bothered about HD, the SD picture is so good.
Fantastic build quality as well.;)0 -
if you want a BIGGER tv just sit closer to the screen.0

I was commenting on why it was "cheap", not on the "mines NOT bigger than yours because yours is useless" mentality that abounds in the Xbox vs PS3, Bluray vs HD fraternity, which by the way can display 1080 lines.
On another tack, everybody knows Sky HD only broadcasts 720 lines, but an ordinary TV already receives 625 lines*, not a vast improvement in picture quality. That quality will be negated if your new tv is larger than the non HD tv you are replacing by more than the percentage increase the change from 625 to 720 gives in vertical resolution.
So what is the point of HD at all, if so few channels are available, just hype IMHO.
Now a 50" Panasonic plasma showing a 1080p signal is to be coveted.
PS
* Yes I know all 625 are not displayed.;)ac's lovechild0
