Is there any at all?

  • I went into Barclays yesterday and asked the same question, they said they will go through the process of opening a full account, if that fails they will offer a basic account if you ask for it.

    Post Office™ card account :
The Post Office™ card account is a new type of account that can only be used to receive benefit, state pensions and new tax credit payments. No other payments, such as wages, can be paid into it. This account may suit you if you want a simple account that won't let you go overdrawn or incur any charges. No credit checks will be carried out when you open this account.

Basic bank accounts don't need a credit check (as they don't offer credit). But as ILEE said, banks will usually try take you through the process of applying to open a full account, and if that fails they will offer a basic account. You should not need to ask for it though.

You can avoid this process if you go in and ask for a new basic bank account, and say you don't want any other type.

Passports or drivers licences are not needed, but some form of ID will be needed. All banks require two forms of ID, one to prove your name and one to prove your address. Banks will accept passports, driver licences, a medical card or birth certificate as confirmation of name and will need a document with your address on it, such as a utility or phone bill.

If you are looking for a basic bank account, see the table in this:

i just opened a nat west step account, filled out the form online, got a call saying i had to go in with driving licence/passport and proof of address (if you have both you can use them as your driving licence has your address, if you have a bank account already you have to use a statement for the previous month), signed the forms and got my account.
Solo card, internet banking and no overdraft, gonna wait six months and see if i can upgrade it.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

I opened a Halifax CardCash account with no problems even after telling them I had a dreadful credit history. They even allowed me a cheque book, but only after a year of consistent good trading.

Does anyone know if the online Lloyds TSB account (as recommended as one of the best current accounts on this site) does the credit check?

The big high street places credit check - most of their systems are in one and all current accounts are scored - they offer you the facilities based on this. Asking for cash card only accounts will probably still be scored.

Also, ID requirements need 1 for name, and 1 for address (2 if you moved within the last 3 months). Some are not accepting medical cards, and bank statements/bills must be dated within 3 months. Ask the bank you are interested in and they will be able to provide a comprehensive list. Payslips are unlikely to be accepted anywhere.

  • Halifax do not credit search for their Card Cash Acc, and if you conduct the acc well for at least 6months and have an income to the acc of £500 or more yu will be able to upgrade to a current acc.
  • I don't understand how basic bank accounts work. I applied for a Lloyds TSB bank account on-line, they rejected me but said their basic account would be more appropriate. I went to a branch and explained, they went through a whole credit search and then said I couldn't have anything, not even the basic account (which was what I wanted).

So I went to Abbey, explained everything. They were really nice and said they would try and at least give me a solo card as I wasn't asking for any credit facilities (so I could have their 6% interest), but my credit score is terrible, so they opened up the basic account for me.

My partner went to Natwest, and they wouldn't open a Step account for him at all, something they told him nearly two weeks after he sat down with someone to open an account and said he could have one.

Does anyone have any experience with Abbey? I'm going to the run the account really well, with my salary going in and everything, do you think they would consider giving me a solo card and cheque book after 6-12 months?
