help with complaining to Zara - baby sleep suit prestuds fell of first use

Hi all - have posted this on the vent, bent forum aswell but hope you don't mind me popping it on here too as I know alot of mums come on this forum!

Am livid this morning and would like a bit of guidance before I vent my spleen at Zara. My mother in law picked up a couple of baby suits in the zara sale last week and I put on of them on my daughter to sleep in for the first time last night. This morning I go to change her nappy and 3 of the prestuds have come off - literally in my hand, my daughter is just at the stage of pulling at things and could have probably pulled them off herself them came off that easily and she could have choked on them - especially the eyelet bit which is spikey. Obviously I want to complain to them but not sure whether to ring first and speak to the manager or not, I live 10 miles away from the shop and it would cost me £6 on the train to get there and I don't need to go for anything else so am loathed just to chance turning up if they aren't going to do anything apart from a refund (they were only a £1 but thats not the point!). What do you think, should I threaten them with trading standards or watchdog or something and see If I can get some vouchers out of them?

  • I wouldn't threaten them with trading standards yet, give them a chance to rectify the fault. I would bypass the store however and phone their head office as this sort of thing should make them do a product recall, and the store may not be aware of that.

I agree- it's more about making them aware of the problem so they can investigate whether your sleepsuits are a one-off, or whether they need to recall all of them.

Hopefully they will send you something for your trouble, if I were you I'd e-mail head office with pictures and barcodes of the items.

  • Hi there,

I actually have the honour of working for trading standards and I would be advising you as above. Contact head office, they generally want to know about these things and ultimatly, if you went to a store for assitance, they would probably refer you to HO anyway! However they probably would give you the money back for the goods as they are not 'free from minor defect' as required when it comes to consumer legislation.

If you don't have any joy at head office level, contact your local Consumer Direct. They will offer you 'first tier advice', which normally includes writing letters, and the legislation to quote, however should it be a safety issue, they would then refer it to the local TS for investigation..

    Hope this help...

like the style of the post,

"could've been a danger to my child"

end it with "should i threaten them to get vouchers"

yes i understand the logistics of you not getting there, but the post came across more about getting a few vouchers rather than letting them know of a potentially fatal problem.

of course they'll refund, the most important thing is letting HO know so they can check it out asap.

yep I realised this myself after writing it but you know what its like when you are mega tired after getting up in the night a couple of times......

anyway I did ask the store who rang head office and asked me to send the offending item to them and they would refund the item/postage/add some compensation (!) and more importantly see if the suits need a recall so I await a reply.
