Megaflo and Glow Worm - can anyone explain?

Hi - this is really useful as I have a similar problem in that I've recently moved into a new house and the first electricity bill is way higher than expected, and I suspect the water tank as the boiler is off yet the water is still hot. It's the same tank, a Megaflo CL210. However there is only one switch in the tank cupboard. It doesn't have a plug. Should this be switched off ?
And when you say the hot water should be set to 24 hours, does that mean on the boiler timer because it sounds expensive to have it on all the time.
Thanks very much for any advice.0 -
Ok I just thought I would post an update.
My friend is a corgi heating engineer. I mentioned it to him and he had a look.
In short it was wired totally wrong.
There was no power to the CH motorised valve which was left in manual open
There was no permanent live to the boiler.
The permanent live was supplied by the froststat which was set at 20 degrees!
In short he has used his diagnostic skills and rewired the wiring block in the airing cupboard, and turned the froststat down to 3!
I am totally aghast that it was wired from new with so many mistakes, and also that it functioned providing CH for 2 and a half years, with the immersion providing the HW.
Hopefully my electric use will dive now0 -
Ive got a similar useless piece of metal in my kitchen that was once a working Glow worm 30sxi. It has been the least reliable piece of engineering I have ever come across. Even worse than an Alfa Romeo. It was installed by our plumber four years ago and i reckon we have since spent about four times the original cost on getting it working.
I have had over five separate guys work on it, each has promised miracles, each has presented me with a large bill and a boiler that works for a few months at best. From new pumps to new valves it has been an unutterable disaster. Part of the problem was that it was wired incorrectly in the first place which took two plumbers several hours to work out - but it strikes me that it was never going to work outside the 12 month warranty period anyway.
I am now going to have to replace it - anyone got any positive ideas? I was hoping to get my hands on one of the new Baxi Combined Heat and Power boilers but understand they are coming "later in 2009", only through BG.Tighter than a ......

I'm afraid I have no knowledge in this area to add to the discussion. Only reason I'm contributing (if you can call it that) is to say that gnats_chuff is very probably the best username I've ever witnessed on any discussion site. Love it.Call me Carmine....

'Which' tested a load of boilers and it might be an idea to get hold of that report.
The problem with boilers, as I see it, is that there is so much 'badge engineering' these days. Firms being taken over/merging and sticking a label with a respected name of yesteryear onto junk.
It is the electronics that apparently give loads of problems on modern condensing boilers and it is a racing certainty that the PCBs(Printed Circuit Board) will be a 'common part' bought-in item on all boilers.
So whilst my 21 year old 'Ideal Mexico' boiler has been virtually faultless, there is absolutely no guarantee that a new model wouldn't be rubbish.(if they still make them)
It would appear that the best guarantee available is 5 years, and then doubtless that is dependant on an expensive annual service - and you can't service a PCB.0 -

I've now decided to go with the Baxi Megaflow - I have a mate who runs a radiator company that can get me one at wholesale price (how much tighter can you get?) so i will get a tame plumber (is there such a thing?) to fit it. I will let you happy punters know how I get on.
I gave up trying to get any sense out of British Gas about a CHP boiler (combined heat and power, of course - do keep up...) Not a clue. I would love to be eco but not at the expense of my sanity!Tighter than a ......
