Does Ireland even have an economy? Other than receiving EU handouts, I mean.

Lots of financial services in Dublin. US companies (eg Citibank and Merrill Lynch) set up shop there around 2000 as it was a cheap English speaking country with an educated population and gave nice subsidies.

Ireland's GDP per capita is about 25% higher than the UK. The EU handouts stopped along time ago.

The problem is that much of that GDP comes (came) from the housing market.

It is now a net EU contributor though. Not sure how that will change if the Irish economy goes into a nosedive. I get the feeling that the salad days of EU giveaways to any country is over. There just isn't the cash in the system any more, especially with all those economically backward Eastern European countries coming on board.

Ireland is a very big producer of computer software also has a big pharmaceutical industry which is more than the U.K has.

AFAIK the 'producer of computer software' thing is to do with the fact that Microsoft physically package their software in Ireland. Most of the software is developed elsewhere.

They do some development work there - mostly localisation - but the myth of Ireland being a huge software exporter comes from the fact that MS have their product packing centre there. Hence their European-sold software is 'made in Ireland' and profits taxed at favourable Irish corporation tax rates .. but certainly it isn't a mainstream development centre like for example, Redmond.

Never said it was as big as redmond not many places are but it employs over 2000 people in Ireland and I can tell you the vast majority are not packing cd's.

By the way they are not the only software company there, I suppose they are all into packing.

So, do you actually have any sources to support your claim that Ireland has a sizeable software industry then?

There are plenty of US tech corporates there, but not a whole lot of software development.
