Hi everybody,
I'm starting to research what toys to get my daughter for christmas
I agree with everyone else that less is definitely more. Your daughter has absolutely no expectations so personally, I would only buy her what she needs/you really would like her to have 'cluttering up' your home!
Also, toys suitable for a one year old are typically quite short lived from my experience (girls now 6 &8.) If she is 'old enough', a doll and cot or play kitchen would be great since they might last a few years. And can be added to.
My eldest got her first doll at 17 months when our DD2 came along. It was a great gift that she still has. In contrast, the only 'baby toy' we still have is a box of coloured wooden building blocks. Oh and the most brilliant Tomy 'Do rae Me Dolphins' playset for the bath which looks nothing special but they both love and still play with (in a more adventurous/imaginery way now): http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/BruHome/BruBabyToys/BruBabyToysPreSchool/BruBabyToysPreSchoolBath/383945
One or two gifts will be enough to keep her happy and within her attention span. So resist shopping heaven if you can.

For my niece's first birthday I was skint so I bought her a foil helium balloon. I don't think a present has ever gone down so well! Might be one to recommend to other family membersSelf employed and loving it

Those Aqua-draw things are quite good, for mess-free scribbling. We've got the one that comes with the Thomas-the-Tank engine train. You draw the track with a water-roller thing and Thomas follows it round. No idea how it works, but I like playing with it too. Might be a bit advanced for a 1-year-old, perhaps.
If the bubba is starting to cruise by then (i.e. walking around using the furniture for support) then a walker might be an idea. We got one for our son's first birthday and by the end of the day he was happily charging up and down the hallway with it.0 -
hi there
we bought our godson a pushalong/ride on for his first birthday and he loves it. It helps him with his walking and isn't something quickly outgrown.
I would bear in mind that your child will probably be inundated with presents as its her first proper christmas and birthday! My mum told me recently that when we were little, after we opened our presents on christmas day she took awaya the ones we weren't playing with and hid them - producing them at various times throughout the year - they were more loved as they were surprises and new to us again!!!
Why not consider something like buying your daughter a special present during the summer to help break up the year - if you have a garden I can't recommend a small sandpit enough!
I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this responser.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!

I bought a set of these for a friend's child, and loved them so much i got some for myself!! I still have them (am in my late 20s and no kids). They're only for when my friends with children come around, you understand :whistle:0 -
-Shape sorters, Fisher price used to make a musical rocking snail which drove me up the wall but which the DDs loved.
We had one too...it's maddening! I even took the snail & musical bit off, & put it away several years ago. Every so often I hear THAT tune from the depths of our loft.....and I have no idea where the bl**dy thing is0 -
