Martinique/The Caribbean - Wedding in March 2009

Hi All,
Not sure if anyone might be able to help me but thought I would ask away anyway.
My friend is getting married in Martinique in March 2009 and by all accounts Martinique is one of the more expensive Caribbean Islands - I guess the strength of the Euro to the Pound doesn't help matters either. Also not helping is there not being any direct flights from the UK.
There will be a group of around 10 of us flying out to the wedding and are looking at ways of cheapening the holiday up.
One possibility I have thought of is perhaps flying from London to a different island closer to Martinique and perhaps getting an all-inclusive resort and 'island hopping' to Martinique on the day of the wedding.
Without having too much knowledge of the islands I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer any advice?
i.e. We are unsure what island would be best to stay on - Barbados, St Lucia, Guadaloupe and Dominica seem to be the closest on a map of the Caribbean although are there decent routes to get to Martinique from there - either by ferry or plane? Also would be unsure as to what would be the best island of those currency-wise and generally keeping the costs down.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

you can use US Dollards in St Lucia too, you can island hop between St Lucia and martinique by ferry or plane

There are smaller hotels/B&B's in st lucia that you could stay in, if you do alot of research there are cheaper ways to stay in St lucia than just your typical large hotel.
