For food I use a cash system.

Apart from this month when I wanted some offers and had to use the credit card :o (will not say that I am about £25 over my GC this month :o)

I pay my petrol on my card. As at my local sainburys if you pay cash unless you ask you don't get a receipt and it is easier just to pay by card as I often put in £35 worth.

Personal spends tends to be cash I take a £10 a week that is for me to spend on personal things such as makeup, toiletries, coffees etc. But if I am buying clothes and shoes it tends to be on my debit card.

    Yours

I think using cash is a great idea! Good luck Mariel!;)

I used to do that but now we are taking part in the grocery challenge I have a set monthly budget and do a once a week Tesco online shop - using the discount codes from this site so I never have to pay for delivery:j This means we pay on our debit card but I keep a close eye on it with the online spending diary which is great and I add on any small top up shops for fruit etc as I go along.
I withdraw cash for everything else such as personal spends and petrol then its easier to see how much you are spending.
I think that doing the GC has saved us a fortune so I'd recommend giving it a try if you havent already!:T

Taplady could you post a link for the tesco online shopping discount I cant find it! thanks

    Hi sistercas,

If you look on the Discount Codes 'n Vouchers board there is a thread for tesco voucher codes that should help.

  • I have just started using cash again, I did it for a while when we were in serious debt and then lost momentum when we cleared it. We have just heard that Hubby's job in jeopardy, so going back to cash in order to save as much as we can

Well today is the end of week 1 and I did it !!

£100 for the week - I spent £10 on petrol and the rest on grocery shopping.

We did not run out of money or food.:j

It really made me think when I went into the supermarket and I stuck to my lists.

There has also been a lot less food wastage this week as I have not bought food on a whim.

Drawn out this weeks £100 and put £20 petrol in out of that so now have £80 for the week.

I have tried so many ways of saving money on the grocery shop all to no avail but this seems to be helping a lot.

I tried online shopping to remove temptation which works BUT i always forget something and end up nipping in to supermarket and spending too much and a once weekly shop it not often enough as we need bread, milk, fruit e.t.c more often.

I tried the grocery challenge but never managed to spend less the next month !!

I keep failing the grocery challenge. It seems the only time I can really keep to a shopping budget is when I have about £17 in my bank and can't spend more than that

I'm thinking of trying to go over to using cash but each time I plan to do that I keep taking my card "just in case" and then go over and use the card :o

I usually shop in 3 different places each month but will try cash only for the rest of the month and see how I go ;)
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
  • I had been getting through money without really knowing how .... It's getting out the debit card for small £20-30 purchases. I have now decided to only get cash out for the week and it's made a massive difference. Not for big purchases but for food, fuel, dry cleaning, other small bits. Anyone else do this ?
  • interesting, if i have cash i find i'm more likely to spend it. we are all different i suppose.

Yes I also do this, I use cash for absolutely everything I buy face to face. Has made a huge difference in what I spend as I know I have x amount of cash to last x amount of time.

I actually only started doing it after my card was cloned getting petrol though. Now I just don't use the card at all except maybe the odd time at the vets if there's an unexpectedly big bill.

Apart from that I only use my debit card at the cash machine and my credit card online.

Lot less things to check off via receipts at the end of the month too which is a bonus!
  • I find it much easier to keep track of. If I am down to my last £20-£30 I know I am at risk of overspending. Before this I just wouldn't have a clue even if I checked my balance as there were so many transactions. As kittycat says we are all different but it works for me.
