Universal remote control

Bought one from e-bay 9 in 1. So far, have only been able to work the TV. I must admit I am not good at following instructions and setting this up. When I programme the VCR, the TV stops working. Am wondering whether I am doing something wrong? The set up is (set+ TV or VCR + Code). Seems very simple.
I bought it hoping to eliminate the clutter of having too many controls, but it is not working at the moment. The user's guide print is so small, it's OK if you have good eyes but not when you are my age. The only good thing is I can use it to switch the TV on and off as my tv control is playing up. At the mooment, we have about 4 controls in the house, it would be nice to have one that can control all or do they? May be the expensive one not the cheapie.
Hope somebody can help with this. Thanks

There is normally a list of codes supplied, which can be entered into the new remote control.
Be aware that any maske of TV or VCR can have more than one code, and only the correct one for your set will work. Its usually a matter of trial and error to set these up.0
