Some book sell much better than others, and it's difficult to work out which are going to make you money because anything that is a particular strong seller has lots of competition so you end up earning 5p after postage has been taken into consideration. It's basically a 'long tail' thing.
I don't know about play.com but on Amazon you get a flat fee for postage within the UK, regardless of how heavy the book is. So if you have something that is particularly heavy or large then you need to account for the extra postage when you are setting a price. Also remember that while Amazon don't charge a listing fee, they do take a cut of the selling price and charge vat on top of that, so again, you need to take that into consideration when listing books for sale.
I have found that 90% of the books I've sold so far have been non-fiction. And you really need books that are out of print so the buyer doesn't have the choice of buying a new book direct from Amazon.
As I mentioned yesterday, I remembered that one of the local second hand book shops buys as well as sells, so on books where there are hundreds listed on Amazon for 1p I am probably better off taking them down there and selling them for 20p. I have the advantage that I live in a large city, but any reasonably big town should have somewhere like that. I'll let you know what sort of deal he offers me when I get down there later today.Oct Challenges: Make £5 a day - £5.18/£155 Grocery Challenge - £0/£2000 -
