Hello everyone,
I am trying to understand all the ins & outs of travel insurance.
We are a family of four: 44 with high blood pressure, 41 and 2 children. We are going to France for a week with our car.
What travel insurance should I look for?
What are the risks without insurance?
What are the limits of the the European Health Insurance Card which we have with us already.

I have read Martin's report on travel insurance, but I haven't found any advice for the case of a family insurance & a pre-existing condition.
I am not familiar with abreviations & codes, so please give details.

Look for the cover which best meets your needs. Start off looking for what you consider to be the best value travel insurance as a family and then check that the policy will cover any pre-existing conditions of those travelling (plus, if required, close relatives who aren't travelling but for whom you may need to cancel the holiday)
Risks without insurance? Just one example - you break your leg the day before you are due to travel. You need to consider cancellation alongside health matters.
EHIC details are covered extensively on the internet, here is just one source of info:

The European Health Insurance card means you have to pay the same fees as a French resident and then claim some of them back through the French NHS equivalent. It does not provide 'free' cover, nor does it cover repatriation in case of a severe accident, etc.
The preeexisting condition you need to declare to the insurance company. They will either accept it (possibly at an increased premium) or decline it. (In which case you should be able to cancel the policy and go elsewhere)
Also consider the need for car breakdown insurance and whether your car insurance needs an extension to cover france0 -
I have rather a lot of pre existing conditions and have found CLUB DIRECT to be very cheap and do cover me for them with no extra cost!!
Just make sure you are very honest with them but so long as you have been signed off by a doctor for any further treatment then you should be covered!0 -
Karma are also good for pre-exisiting medical conditions and when looking at them today they were actually cheaper than other insurers who wouldnt cover for my medical conditionsThe only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about - Oscar Wilde:beer:

I got insurance through Free-Spirit with existing medical condition.
There was an on-line medical screening questionaire - which was better than a lot of sites that simply said "Sorry - don't cover that"“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0
