Not sure it's always that high, I've had a return on one for just less than £1.5k in the past due to an error on the cheque
The threshold is currently £5000, but (at least some) banks pull random samples out od those less than £5000 to scrutinise. Your cheque must have been randomly selected.
  • Sorry if this has been suggested already but cheques are normally only taken in stores with a cheque guarantee card. Therefore it doesn't matter if there is a fault at all with the cheque, the store are still guaranteed to receive their money.

    No they're not :D

From the cheque card scheme rules
    http://www.apacs.org.uk

It is signed, before the expiry of the card, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar or on the premises of any
United Kingdom Customs post located outside these territories in the presence of the
    payee by the account holder.

An unsigned cheque is not guaranteed under the cheque card scheme.

  • Ah. I stand corrected. So if your cheque guarantee card (credit / debit card) is used they can't put it through as if they would on a transaction without the customers signature (over the phone, for example) ?

Not sure if that's possible but if it was then it wouldn't come under the cheque guarantee part of the scheme - payment by debit card is a different method of payment altogether (cue Airplane joke) ;)

When a query is put up about banking practice, don't you expect people with banking experience to offer their experiences?
