Suggestions for cheap travel between Edinburgh and Milton Keynes please

Help! My boyfriend lives in Edinburgh, I live in Milton Keynes and the cost of travel is getting extortionate!
Can anyone suggest a way of getting between the two places cheaply please. The cost of petrol means we can't drive and the coach is out as the times it leaves means it isn't worth while paying the money but we would like to see each other more than once every six weeks so I'm hoping moneysavers can help us.
We are especially looking for something the weekend of 8th or 15th August.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance

Train is about £125 return, 2 trains. Edinburgh/Kings Cross, Euston/MK Central. 11 hours in total.
How about finding somewhere mid-way that's cheaper to get to for both of you and camping? Minimise the journey and both have a holiday.
Easyjet flies to, say, Luton on 8th at £26-40, depending on time of day; flies back on 10th at £50. That's only about 20 miles from you, must be a bus.0 -

Can he not hitch down to see you? If memory serves, the A1M is reasonably convenient for both places. Alternatively, why not register for one of the liftsharing websites, either to share costs in your car or to pay costs in sharing with someone else.0 -
Thanks for the tip!
That sounds exactly what I'm looking for! Any ones that you could recommend?0 -
Not from personal experience; start off with Google.0

I would try plan your time together in advance and try and make use of advance booking of train tickets/cheap flights to get the best prices.
Before I was married, my husband-to-be lived near Inverness and I lived in the South of England yet with planning we managed to afford to see each other every other weekend without fail for the eighteen months before we were able to live together.0
