Scanning documents into an FTP server

Options
My mate needs to scan (30-40 a day) of A4 documents and transfer them to another location.
I suggested to set the scanner up so that it uploads the documents in smallish JPG format directly into an FTP server.

Is this possible?
What reasonably priced scanner with doc feeder, should he get?

Thanks

Adobe Reader format, pdf files can be read resized, edited, small files including images and read on any system, not just pc's, thats what it does. Might be expensive tho'.
Also scanners are expensive with feeders and 40 a day that's not many...

There is also software called paperport I think, Got a copy with my Brother printer/scanner.

Yeah, if it's only 40 sheets a day i'd be inclined to just do it by hand. If someone else is buying the scanner then go for it. :)

As for the transferring, it'd be pretty easy to setup a script to periodically upload the contents of a folder to a specified FTP.

I love FTPRush because it's nice and scriptable, but you could probably do the same with a batch file and a scheduled task.

  • Thanks for the replies.

Can someone recommend a decent but relatively cheap-ish scanner with a doc feeder?

I've seen someone using software whereby the FTP server is mapped out as a new drive (e.g. X drive) and I thought this could be a good solution to set the output to X drive.
    Are there better solutions?

Yeah, I've seen apps that will mount an FTP server as a drive, but the problem there is if the connection breaks halfway through upload. Your scan will abort because the drive will become unavailable all of a sudden.

With a timed script that will synchronise a local and remote directory, it'll just keep trying periodically until it manages.

  • Thanks Weegie, I see your point.
The trouble is that I wouldn't know how to do the timed script thing..! How..?

And anyone out there can recommend a decent scanner with a doc feeder (can be part of a multi function printer)

It'd be easier to use an application specifically for synchronising a local folder with one on an FTP though.

Google for "ftp automatic upload" or "ftp folder sync" or something like that.

Can't help on the scanner front. I've only ever used bog standard one sheet at a time things. Oh, and hand scanners and drum scanners but hand scanners were an abomination and drum scanners will be a little out of your price range :)

any decent mfp will do it can even scan them to email if you like.
The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.

I had a similar task to do - I wanted to scan the interesting bits of all my old magazines so I could get rid of them. Also old bank statements etc.

I bought a Canon DR2080C new from ebay for about £200 (a couple of years ago now). It's excellent - small, fast, double sided scan, reliable, has a USB interface and works well with Paperport. It sits on the edge of the desk and the docs drop straight through into the paper bin.

It's discontinued now, but there may be a replacement model?
