Reskimming old walls

Thanks Toyboy and andrew-b. Just what I expected.
Will have to shop around for a decent price!0 -
I had a go at plastering last year, when I did my daughters bedroom. The walls were old and I had to rip down the partition wall and put plasterboard up. It is very hard work ,especially on the arms, but very rewarding.
The thing I learned from this is that skimming plasterboard produced near perfect results, but skimming the wall was a lot harder, because the water absorbed from the plaster to quick. I did use diluted PVA as a primer, so as I am just about to plaster my hallway I am going to use 2 coats of PVA this time and see how it goes.
Don't be put off . If you like a challenge and want to save loads of money have a go at one wall first. I plan to do the whole house in the next few years and I was in exactly the same position as you were.0 -
Danosaur - thanks for the inspiration!
I'm really in two minds.
I might give it a go. Then if it messes up then I can always get it done by a pro.
But then again it might not be worth the hassle - could just be worth leaving it to a pro.
I think a few quotes will help me decide!!0 -
2 rooms that size will be around £500ish0

Where do u live Bob ... someone could maybe recommend a good plasterer for you.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
I just can't bear to see someone pay for somthing that THEY can do themselves.
For all of you doubters, I expect the finish in my house to be the same as a new one. It just takes hard work.
My rooms look like rooms from new houses, but my house is 1900's. I have very high standards.
This is for all of the people who think that doing it yourself is not the best way.0 -
Well, I don't mind putting the hard work. I know it will be a lot cheaper!
I've actually looked at doing an intensive plaster course. £325 for a 5 day intensive course! http://www.ableskills.co.uk/plastering.htm
Of course, not going to become a master plaster in 5 days. But maybe worth a go. There are also courses of DVD that I've seen.
I live in Surrey, so any locals that could give me an idea of the cost would be good.
Thanks for all your help!0 -
Around £300 for the 2 providing there is no windows alcoves etc and radiators are off, add £50 if its not straight forward..

I had three artex ceilings and three walls skimmed and it cost me about £700. Was also incredibly messy. If you can avoid it, then do! DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
