A cheap place to stay in NYC for a month?

I'm going to New York to do a course in the Autumn. The university has offered me accommodation in an apartment they own in Brooklyn. I have a choice of a single room, for $1,100 (out of my budget), or $650 for a room shared with three others. These prices are for 28 nights.

I'm wary of sharing a room with three others, as the course I'm doing is intensive and I'm quite fussy when it comes to sleep (I can't sleep with noise, lights on, snorers, smokers, etc)

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations about how I could find somewhere to stay for a month there? I'd really prefer a single room, but cheap, and not in an unsafe neighbourhood. Or am I asking too much?

short term rentals is what you need to look for... you might be able to get a house share, that isn't a room share as such...

craigslist is an obvious place to check out, but it is going to be difficult to sort something out without actually being in the city IMO

    Stay in a hostel?

I stayed here for 2 weeks and the website claims the prices are still only 29 dollars per night.

Maybe you could even negotiate a better rate if you would stay an entire month there? 300 dollars for the month is a bit better than 650 or 1,100! :)

The $29 rate will get you a room in an eight to twelve bedded room. The OP would be very lucky to have the room to themselves!
    Gone ... or have I?

I'm sure you're right but the OP cares and wants a room to herself!
