Tesco Car Insurance & Driving in Europe

Hi,

We've recently purchased a new car and need to sort out insurance. We want to go fully comprehensive.

Tesco has come out one of the cheapest which we are happy to go with.

However, we have a couple of queries:

1. We have a joint Tesco Clubcard (in my name though) - apparently to qualify for the 1000 Clubcard points, the named driver has to be the same named person on the Clubcard.

"Unfortunately Clubcard points can only be awarded where the main policy holder’s name on the insurance policy matches the name of the Clubcard holder. If you are a named driver on a policy in someone else’s name, no match will be made and no points allocated."

It's cheaper with my wife as the named driver. Is it possible that the points will be added to our Clubcard or should I create another clubcard for her and then look to combine the two Clubcards?

Also, I see that there is a code 'shop40' to get £40 off groceries or fuel when purchasing Tesco Car Insurance. Presumably you can't use both shop40 and get the 1000 clubcard points. If that's the case I'll go with the clubcard points as they are worth 4x as much and I'd probably rather use them outside of Tesco.

2. We are taking the car to Europe in August. Apparently, Tesco (like others) will only insure it fully comp. for 3 days after which it goes to third party fire and theft. Should we be worried by this and should I speak to Tesco about increasing to fully comp. to go to Europe?

Thoughts much appreciated,

  • Hi there

    1. What they mean is that the person whos name the policy is in has to be the name on the clubcard too. You should be fine.

With regard to the shop40 and clubcard points, you usually only get one or the other, but if there is nothing to say otherwise give it a go and phone them if you don't get both.

    2. You should be able to get what is called a "green card". Basically, you phone your insurer and let them know the dates that you are going abread and they charge you an additional premium to give you fully comp cover in Europe.

Thanks, any idea how much the latter might cost - we're going for 2 weeks.
  • No idea, I'm afraid. Give them a call and ask. They should be willing to tell you.

Spoke to Tesco earlier today and they said yes, you'd get the points if the card is registered to the same address.

They also said the extra cost to go fully comp in Europe for 2 weeks would be between £15 and £30.

    Thanks!
