try looking on https://www.latelet.com and find a self catering break somewhere. The site shows which places have availability and their prices, self catering may be the cheapest and can often be quite fun too. Ive used the site a few times and would certainly recommend it.

Maybe a short break on a working farm near a seaside town - the children could see all the animals etc but you are also near to the seaside for activities for the children

Have you tried any other campsites than Haven?

www.ukcampsite.co.uk is a good website to try. My OH and I just came back from 10 days' camping, and it was £150, including electric hook up for our tent. There are lots of child-friendly sites available, and many of them have good children's facilities (many of which are included in the price, or you just need a small deposit).

I guess it depends if you're looking for an all-singing all-dancing 'Butlins' style campsite with Kids Clubs and so on - something like that will obviously be a lot more expensive than an ordinary site. It really depends on what you're looking for.

Anyway, I hope you get your holiday!

At my daughters' school there is now a zero holiday tolerance. This was brought in after a recent Ofstead visit where they noted a higher than usual lack of attendance.

I live in a tourist area and therefore for parents involved in the tourist industry it is not possible to have a summer holiday during school holidays as they themselves are at their busiest. A friend of mine who is an entertainer in the hotels always has their family holiday in Jan/Feb as it is the quietest time of year for their profession.

Some schools in the area have been adding all the teachers' days into one week and therefore giving 2 weeks instead of the 1 in the May half term. Trouble is that if all schools did this the travel operators would just up the price of this week as well.

I have been looking at breaks for August next year and the prices are terrible. I have said to my daughters that we can only go on holiday abroad every 2nd year.

    Hi

If you're interested in camping have you thought about buying your own tent etc ?

I know a bit of an outlay at the start but you've then got the kit to use as and when you can.

This website will give yous of information about tents, equipment and recommendations on campsites.

I think your best bet is to ask the teacher involved if he/she can tell you what they are doing that week and ask if you can show you child that instead, whilst away.

The only thing I'd object to is teacher haveing to spend time with one child to help them catch up, when the rest of the class were in:)
