I think we can all see who run their airline well.
I have never had bad service on a US airline. As with any airline there will always be people that have had bad experiences, but mine are significantly better than those with UK airlines.
Does the operating margin matter one bit to the customer? No, they just want cheap fares and good service. In that respect, US wins for me!Gone ... or have I?0 -
Thanks for all replies. The worker at Salt Lake City stated the although the luggage was tagged for Glasgow, we definitely would have to take it through customs at Heathrow (to top it all off, 2 of our suitcases were misplaced in Terminal 5 until the day after we arrived home)
The flights were booked through Airline Network and I can't find anything on my paperwork stating that we may run the risk of this happening. I agree that British Airways were not at fault. I have emailed Delta's customer services department and will keep you updated.

Sorry to read your problem:)
Your problem was asking the wrong person, I'm afraid. As someone else has pointed out, the answer you got was correct if your flights had been from UK to USA, with a connecting flight at your destination country (US rules are that you clear customs at your entry point). Travelling from USA to UK, with luggage checked right through, you ALWAYS collect your luggage at your final destination, where you clear customs (in GLA there is a special carousel for luggage starting its journey from outwith EEC).
In the absence of evidence of bad advice you are screwed, I'm afraid. In your shoes I would, through gritted teeth, put it down to a lesson learned.....albeit an expensive one.0 -

If the luggage goes on a plane (as you say they put yours on at Heathrow) & the passenger(s) don't get on the flight, they go crazy running aroung calling them, as its usually quicker to find the passenger(s) then sort through all the luggage to get the right cases off.
This is in case of a bomb & its a safety rule, didn't they not tanoy your name over & over?
If they didn't, & they took your luggage without you, haven't they just done a major boo boo.0 -
Just to clarify - the luggage did not go onto the Heathrow-Glasgow flight which we missed. It was held at Heathrow and surprise, surprise just one case made it into Glasgow at the same time as us, the other 2 arrived 5 hours later.
I'm a bit confused by AMF's statement that we asked the wrong person - the worker I asked was the one processing our checked in luggage through the system.
I've had an email back from Delta asked for a few more details and will keep you updated.

So you were told yyou would have to collect your baggage while you were in the US, when you got to Heathrow you did collect your baggage?
Then when you got on yout new flight because of missing the first one, one of your cases was with you (on your new flight) & the others were delayed?
So if you were told your luggage wouldn't go straight through & it didn't? Then the problem was the lack of time between the two flights & the 15 minutes arriving late from the US was the straw that broke the camels back?
I'm guessing this was two different bookings rather than one flight package?
I think that leaves you open to problems when there are delays, because they as far as they are concerned if its not their airline they don't want to know.
Its rough isn't it.0 -

To illustrate the point I was trying to make, it might be helpful if I told you what happened a month ago when I tried to check in at Glasgow for our flights Glasgow-Manchester (bmi)/overnight/Manchester to Chicago (bmi)/Chicago to Orlando (TED).
At GLA check in the lady tried to check us all the way from GLA-MCO. I only found this out when it became apparent that she was having some difficulty and asked her what the problem was. I pointed out to her that she could not check us right through to MCO as we were overnighting at MAN, prior to catching our connection next day (being a frequent flier I am usually aware of how these things work, sometimes more so than some check in staff;)).
The lady checked us in GLA-MAN. When we went to use the evening check in for next day transatlantic flights at MAN the check in lady was again having problems. I asked her what was the problem. She replied that the lady at GLA had put one of my party out of premium economy into economy in her efforts to check us all the way through. After a quick call, this was rectified.
Whilst check in staff usually get it right, in my experience they are not infallible.
Good luck in your efforts to get some compen:beer:0
