Hi everyone,
I've just got off the phone to British Gas (26-07-08) on electricity prices, and thought you might like to see the figures for yourself to judge whether you want to change. The tiers are what you pay for the first bunch of electricity, so x amount for the first 1000w (for e.g) and x for every w thereafter
Click 1 tier 1 18.949
tier 2 9.753
Notes - Click 1 is their cheapest rate, it is online only and DD
Standard tier 1 23.205 (so about 23% higher that Click 1)
tier 2 9.725 (so slighlty cheaper than Click 1)
Notes - standard is what you pay if you pay a bill monthly/quarterly etc by cheque of cash
Capped tier 1 25.475
(So just over 27% more than Click 1 and 10% more than Standard)
tier 2 10.679
(So just under 10% more than Click 1 and 10% more than Standard)
Notes – capped until Dec 09
I haven't fixed my rate, not wanting to increase my electricity charges by nearly a third, but if Martin's prediction of 60% is true, I might wish I did! They would have to be that increased for 18 months though, as the BG rate is fixed until Dec 09. Make your own mind up!

I used to be on London Electric back in the days when they brought out their online tariff for the first time. Hardly anything happened to the price, then EDF came along and raised the price a little. Nothing major.
In other words they left the online customers alone on version 1.
Earlier this year they ramped up prices in one fell swoop by 19%.
I'd advise you to really carefully think about the whole energy market here - I'll bet you your tariff will be increased by double percentage figures within the next 3 months. By which time the capped deals will have risen again in price and no longer be as competitive as they are now. I used to be in exactly the same mindset as you but EDF's online charges soon brought me back down to earth.
Thing is these predictions aren't Martin's. They're industry predictions and are widely spread. I fixed this morning and yes I'll be paying about 20% more for my bills now but when this latest price rise round finishes I'll have broken even, then I'm on a winner for the next year.
(Note - those prices you quote will only be for your region, not the rest of the country).0
