Opening up fireplace

We have a fireplace in the living room. We've lived here 10 years, when we moved in there was a gas fire in front of the fireplace with the gas pipe coming up throught he floorboards to one side of the fire surround. We removed the gas fire years ago but have never used the fireplace.
We now want to start using the fireplace this winter, are there any issues to be aware of? Obviously we will need to have the chimney swept and checked over.

Check that your fireplace and mantle are rated to take a real fire, alot of ones these days arent suitable. Make sure that the gas pipe insn't to close to the firepalace.0
