Help ! No gas bill from secondary meters!!

 Hi this is to see if any one else might have had the same problem. I moved into a new build block of flats in camberley just over 2 years ago and was told to connect to the water, electic and gas etc. I could sort out the electic no problem water and gas i could not get the meters reconised. The water meter has now been replaced but we are on going with the gas.

Gange management who run the flats are trying to recover the gas bill that they say that has been paid for the past 2 years either by them or bloor homes who built the complex. I have been through engery watch and they can not help because it is through a 3rd party i that i have to go through leagl action.

The main stress is that they want to charge the 140 approx flats there gas bill from there main meter or meters not sure how many and just divied it by the number of flats and not take our secodary meter readings.

Does anyone have any information that they could pass on? One of the residents has just made a residents forum which i have joined and we are now waiting to see what they are going to charge us for the gas. Also because of this we can not chose or cap our supply!!

Anyone been is same situation?

First tyhings first....gas suppliers eg British Gas,etc etc only charge gas bills for supply points which they supply. The supply point will be directly supplied from a live gas service (in from the streets!) through a primary meter. Any secondary meters have nothing to do with the gas supplier but are the responsibility of the landlord or agent. All primary meters should have a reference number called a meter point reference number, commonly referred to as a MPRN. If you think you are being supplied by a primary meter from a live gas service pipe as opposed to a secondary meter, and you need to find out who your gas supplier is,you coule try ringing your gas transporter. In your area it is likely to be national Grid. Try this number as a starting poiint... 0845 606 6766. Have your full address and post code ready and also a serial number for the meter which you believe supplies your premises. Your situation isnt quite clear to me but hope this helps!

If they are trying to charge you there are limits on any markup a landlord can make. Also if you have your own meter and readings then I suspect they would find it hard in law to charge for more units than the meter says you have used. There is also the concept of prime and sub meters were the prime records everything and the subs just record for what is used there. Basically the sub get billed for what they use and the prime gets charged to the prime minus the sum of the subs.

  • Sounds like they really messed things up when they got the meters installed. It is the developers responsibility to nominate an initial supplier. Looks like they didn't do this. Therefore, its there problem. However - is there anything in your lease (not sure if its a rental or not?) about any charges payable for energy used?

A bit mess. I would contact a supplier of your choice asap and tell them you would like them to become your supplier.
