Dell Pentium 4 630, 160GB, 1GB Mem, 17" TFT - £531 Incl.

One of the latest offers from Dell - use code D-D10516 - select 1 year collect and return option and you get a pretty impressive machine:

Dimension 5150 desktop
Pentium 4 630 with HT, 800MHz FSB, 2MB cache
1GB Memory
160GB SATA Hard Disk with 8MB cache
16X DVD+/-RW drive
128MB X300SE Graphics Card
Dell A215 speakers
Optical mouse (optional at £0 cost - remember to pick this)
Windows XP Home SP2
Delivery & VAT included

Total price £531.43 all in!

Almost identical to the mistaken price system they sold a few weeks ago for £407 (which I have :D). Great little machine even at £531.

You can also opt to upgrade the graphics card to a 256MB X600 card for an additional £23.50.

Usual rules apply - Grab it while you can!

Sorry if its a silly question, but what speed is a P4 630? And is the graphics card any good? I don't go mad with shoot em ups, etc, but I do play the odd game that needs a fairly decent card.

    Never mind, found it - it's a 3Ghz. :o

You can buy 128mb graphics cards pretty cheap. Or if you are really lazy, you can add it on to the spec that I posted.

    P4 630 is a 3.0GHz machine - I stuck in a 128MB 6600GT graphics card and it flies!

You could buy one from the small business site, add in a £100 graphics card and have a pretty impressive machine for about £550. Or you could pick up a mid range X300 or X600 card on Ebay for probably £20-£30ish and have a good machine which will do everything except play the latest 3D games - making this a good home PC for about £480ish.

The only problem with the small business site is you don't get consumer rights to change your mind after you've ordered.

Does this computer allow you to record cd's? Can you also advise if you can use any printer with a Dell PC or must you buy a Dell printer- I currently have an HP Deskjet 810c. Do use also need to but software if you want Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

    thanks

The PC will let you record CDs and DVDs.
It does come with microsoft works I would imagine? This gives you a word and excel type program from Microsoft, but it isnt the full Microsoft Word / Excel. The Works programs are still compatible though.
Modern printers connect via USB. I believe the 810c is parallel, and therefore wont connect to any new PC. But you can pick up printers very cheap anyway.
However, you can get cheaper new Dell PCs which will easily meet your requirements if you just wish for a PC to write documents, surf the web and print.

This machine comes with Microsoft Works 7.0 which is a cut-down version of Word/Excel combined into one package - a bit Mickey Mouse if you're used to the full Monty but still usable for people who only want to do word processing or basic spreadsheets. No use if you want to build complicated Excel workbooks with lots of formulae and macros though.
Personally I installed my own copy of Office because I need it for my work.
Machine will also create CDs and DVDs no bother - particularly good at cutting audio CDs from downloaded MP3 files using Windows Media Player 10.

Is there a code to get it without a monitor?
  • What is the best graphics card for putting with this machine for gaming (eg Quake 4, UT2004). Who do I know which one with work with the mobo. I have used nVida before, but am open to suggestions. Thinking on spending approx £50.

Also if I wanted to add more RAM again how do I select this. I don't understand DDR, DDR2 and DIMM.

    Any help appreciated
