im so confused - pls help!

Hello!

Im a newly single mum and want to bring down my bills. I dont have gas its just electricity and its economy 7. My last annual consumption was 8246KW but that was when we'd leave the place like blackpool illuminations and run the dishwasher and washing machine every day. Now I just run them in the middle of the night as its cheaper and much less often

Ive tried all the switching saites but they all quote different - can anyone help me please??

thanks in advance
love
Andrea
Thank you :D

  • The information you have given isn’t much help .

You will need to know how much of that 8,246kW you used at daytime rates and how much at night(economy 7 rates) Day rates are approx 3 times as high as night rates.
Approx how much was your annual bill in £s and who with?

You then need to estimate how much you feel you can cut down under your new economy drive.

In general terms it is central heating and any other heating devices that have the heavy consumption.

Assuming that you have some form of Economy 7 night storage central heating and water heating, you should be aware that any ‘topping up’ you do during the day will be very expensive.

I've found that uswitch.com works accurately. All you need is to find out how much of your 8246kWh is used in the day and how much at night.
(After heating, the biggest eater of electricity is the fridge/freezer. It may be worth considering a more economical one if your existing one is already coming up to the end of it's life.)

when you know your full consumption, the best thing to do is use one of the comparison sites. don't compair the prices, just make a note of the unit rates and compair these. If you get conflicting rates then check directly with the supplier, but again, ask for unit rates not a tariff calculation. do not forget to ask which discounts apply. if you confirm a companies rates, then simply do the calculation yourself, based on the info on your bills.

  • Hi,

have posted elsewhere that we have huge Utility bills and was looking to reduce like you.

I may not be able to advise on the actual suppliers, but may be able to offer some advice on total energy savings.

We are currently with Scottish Power so I 'phoned their Energy Efficiency line. A very helpful guy gave me some tips over the phone and is sending out a do's and dont's list of recommendations. This is apparently much more than advice on loft & cavity wall insulation.E.g. a satelite receiver and mobile phone charger on continously uses a lot more power than you you might think.

In general, apart from the obvious washing machine operation, it is the accumulation of all the household gadgets that mount up.

The SP helpline no. is 0800 33 22 33 if you want to contact them. I think they might be receptive even if you just say that you are thinking about switching to them as a provider.

    Hope this helps

what happens if you put your charger in your mouth when its plugged in....

    Nothing, thats right.

if chargers waste so much electricity when they are not in use, then where does all this missing power go?
    Beware the green?
  • The transformer in the charger is very inefficient and it generates heat. If it generates heat, it uses current, it may not be a lot but it is pure waste when not being used for charging.

We use econ 7 to heat water and find one tank full (Takes about 1 1/2 hrs) last us all day for 5 showers and a load of washing in an american machine which uses load of hot water) So check that you actually need an afternnon top-up a full price leccy cos you may not. HTH
