How long should I keep my bank statements for?

Are you not on the Electoral Roll? I have applied for various credit cards over the years and have never been asked for proof of address over time. I wonder if they only ask for this if they can't find your details automatically on the Electoral Roll?

I have also had a few address changes over the past few years so am quite used to having to give previous addresses, but have never been asked for proof.

EDIT: Just to add, I just remembered that my wife recently had to provide proof of the date that she moved out from her mother's and moved in with me. Thankfully I had water bills and council tax information with her name on, plus documents showing the date of house purchase etc. Just goes to show it is worth keeping some stuff.

I think it's because I've only been in the country a few years, and I've only been on the electoral roll for two years, because at first I didn't think you were allowed to be on the roll if you weren't a British citizen.
