Hi,
I have a halstead quatrro gold boiler, TRVs on all rads but no room thermostat. I find it is either WAY too hot or WAY too cold in winter, would a wall thermostat help with this (and our horrendous gas consumption-about 30000kwh for just CH&HW:eek:)
I know we should switch it to a condensing gas boiler but its a lot more than we can afford at the moment
Do you think putting a thermostat in would help? can they be retrofitted? (BG told me could have a wireless one for about £150 ish-but quote was last year)
If so, should I get BG to do it, or who? corgi plumber/electrician?
Thanks

There have been lots of posts on this subject.
If your rooms are "WAY too hot or WAY too cold in winter," then the TRVs are not operating correctly, or you have some other problem with your CH.
The problem with a room thermostat is that the temperature of your whole house is determined by the location of that thermostat.0 -
ok, really stupid question-maybe I don't have TRVs? I have the big turny things on the rads with numbers from 1-6 on them, probably exaggerated on the way too hot way too cold thing, but I do find it hard to find a happy medium0

Good morning: Advice on central heating controls is available here and a selection of TRVs . Do you have loft/cavity wall insulation? If you don't, have it done....you can find out about grants at the Energy Saving Trust

I don`t know how big your house is or how many rads you have but surely by changing your boiler it will eventually pay for itself looking at your high gas consumption. Gas prices aren`t going down right now so I would take the plunge.0

Am sure a new boiler would eventually pay for itself, however, we just cannot afford a new one at the moment
(if I did get one it would be a good quality one-have heard valiant or worcester the best?) But reckon will cost at least around £1500 to get fitted (presume system would need power flush etc?
The TRVs look like what we have on our rads, so shall have a play about with them this winter when we switch heating on. We have a loft conversion so presume they would have done insulation on ceilings when the previous owners did that (snow doesnt melt that quickly off our roof) room is freezing in winter though (has laminate floor and they didnt bother to extend the CH up there) Don't think we have cavity wall so will definitely look into that before the winter
