A strange ie problem

Hi

As above.

I am using windows vista home premium on a dell vostro 1510, ie 7.

From yesterday lunchtime ie7 has been taking 3-4 minutes to open a page. With the exception of doing a saerch using the inbuilt search bar with google search, which works as normal until you try and open one of the results

Doing a speed test shows the speed of the line is erratic between 300kbs and 227mbs ( not a typo ). Normally stays around 1mb. I have no upload speed, anytime i try and check it with any speed tests it hangs

Outlook express receives messages but doesnt send, again possibly indicating no upload speed.

I have completed a virus and spyware scan and ran ccleaner and completed a system restore to the point when it was working ok.

My computers are both having teh same problem and both connect wirelessly, i have tried wired with no diference

The only thing i have done recently ( weds night )was try a net send command not realising this didnt work in vista, howeverthe run box just disappered after the command was entered, woudl this cause the above issues

Does this sound like an ISP issue?, they are doing checks bit woudl like peace of mind.

If anyone can recomend anything to try it will be appreciated

What happens if you open a dos prompt and type:-

    Ping www.bbc.co.uk

    ?

Is it slow to respond? If you have no upload speed, then your request will take a long time to get sent from IE/Outlook and the responses from your computer will be equally slow, hence slowing down the whole network, not just IE.

Could be a DNS issue; is the HOSTS file still relatively empty. It should just have the example in it. You could try manually putting in an Open DNS address instead of the ISP's provided one, in the network properties on the computer.

There's a tiny probability it could be interference; Have you tried connecting wired and disabling the wireless. I just wonder if there's some interference, but the router should filter it out.

I alsowonder if it's a router problem. Can you borrow a router and try that? Given the very odd speeds your speed test is reporting?

What does your ISP say about the problem (are you cabled or ADSL connected).

As a last resort, if you know how to re-establish a router from scratch, do a factory reset on the router - that's a last resort, but the problems are odd.

    Hi

By open dns adress i take it you mean not isp assigened?, if so i always have it set this and way and have checked the details are correct.

I have tried wired and their is no difference

Isp ( tiscali  ) say they are regrading the line and monitoring it, They say they will call me back in 48 hours

I do have a second router but never used as tried to set it up before and it wouldnt work.

    Hi,

Yes, I saw that you've already tried, but what I was after, was for you to actually disable the wireless on the router to rule out any interference from a nearby hub.

Something similar happened to a friend I went to, and found that next door went on to BT Home Hub the night the problem started, and his router was closer the computers than his own hub! We found it out by changing the wireless channel from the default 11 to either 1 or 6.

If you're already using Open DNS, you could try going back to the Tiscali DNS servers?
