Bad Debt

My dad had a council unit for his business which he vacated in 2001. He is now being chased by a debt collection agency saying he owes £2000.00 to British Gas. British Gas say they have sold the debt and can't help - but say the account has been dormant since 2000. The debt collection agency are saying it relates to 2002. We know nothing about this debt and nobody seems to be able to help - are we best ignore it?

... are we best ignore it?
    Probably

...especially if, as you say, nobody (and I assume that includes the debt collection agency that is chasing your dad for it) seems able to help him understand what it relates to.
