PC World laptop battery checks

If anyone is unlucky enough to have a battery stop charging in their laptop DON'T take it to PC World.

I took it in where they charged me £14.99 to check the mains power lead, apparantly they don't check the battery itself, which they told me was working fine and it was either my battery or the battery charge unit. I went and spent nearly £80 on a new battery which once received also did not charge.

Thus by PC World's logic I would have had to replace the rather expensive battery charge unit in the laptop itself.

I went and bought a new power lead as my lead began to work intermittently (I trod on it and it tugged at the wires inside) which to my horror began to charge the new battery. I plugged the old battery in and it also charged the old battery too.

I've written a letter complaining to PC Worlds head office as clearly their "highly training" tech guys who took my power lead away for all of 15 seconds, plugged it into the back of one of their laptops and said it was working. Clearly it was generating enough power to power the laptop as I had already told them that this was how I was running my laptop but its clear now that it wasn't generating enough power to charge the battery as well as power the laptop. Surely this would have been obvious had they tested it on an ampmeter????

Anyway, if anyone has the same problem, go to someone else.

Their Tech guys are absolute !!!!!. They make me laugh. I have been working in IT for 12 years now and when I have to go into their store for something or any DSG group store, i love the codswallop they seem to come out with and then proceed to question them on their comments knowing full well they are talking !!!!! and make them aware of it

Right, need a bit of help.

I've received a letter back from PC World, they have agreed straight away to refund me the money for the service they carried out (checked the charger) and I have received the cheque for £14.99.

I didn't actually ask for this, I asked for the battery that I bought through their recommendations and based on the "test" that they carried out which cost me £80.

Within their letter they have stated that
Having looked into the matter, I can confirm that due to the store not carrying out repairs on laptops, there is limited testing that can be carried out to identify a fault.

They state that they won't refund the battery as it was bought from a different supplier (PC World couldn't offer me a battery anyway).

From the quote above, the only conclusion I can come up with is why do they even do this service? Is it just easy cash generation and to hell with what we recommend?

Isn't their something in the sale of goods act that says that the goods or serices have to be fit for purpose? If so, I reckon i could mention the lovely words of trading standards and I may be able to recoup the cost of the battery that I didn't need.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
