I like to cover a shoebox with christmas wrapping paper - costs next to nothing and then fill with suitable contents for the person you are giving to. So for elderly relatives I buy small sizes of products, ie. tea bags, small jars coffee, tinned fruit making as much use of buy1get1frees and the like spend up to a fiver if thats your level but you can get lots - even local market stall can be sourced for different products (check for expiry dates).
Children and the like get sweets - again mini packets are fine and look how many you can get.
Husband likes practical items like shower soap etc no problem to get a fivers worth for him and look at the points you can rack up for yourself while shopping! :j0 -
Name-When we were young
Buy it
Cost-under a fiver
Details.-I hit on this idea while looking for presents for dad and dad-in-law who already have everything. All year I comb Flea markets or second hand stalls(sometimes e-bay) for magazies printed in the the year they were born.(1928 and 1931).
Father in law loves old cars so motoring magazines are ideal, my dad is a musician, and film addict, so anything theatrical appeals to him.
Give and then wait for the, I can remember when we were young, you could get a new car/night at the theatre for.......Those were the days!

Name of present: wheat bag
Do you make it or buy it? Make it
Total cost? Under £1
Details: you need a remnant of material (a sturdy cotton is good), thread and wheatgrains (I found some in a local health food shop on special offer for 80p a kilogram. If you are making in bulk and don't want to lug the stuff around https://www.browfarm.co.uk does a 20kg bag for £17.50 including delivery). Cut a piece of fabric approximately twice the size you'd like the finished bag to be. Fold it in half and, with right sides together, stitch a seam along two 'open' sides and halfway along the third open side. Turn right side out, tucking in the raw unstitched edges. Fill with wheat; 750 gm nicely fills a bag about 8" x 6". Shake the wheat down to the bottom while you stitch up the remaining part of the open seam. If you have any dried lavender, a handful of that added to the wheat smells gorgeous (go to https://www.ebay.co.uk and search on 'lavender buds'). Heat in a microwave for a couple of minutes until the bag is comfortably warm. CAUTION: do not overheat - bags can get very hot and burn, either themselves or you! Every so often put an eggcupful of water in the microwave next to the wheatbag while you are heating it. Apparently this helps retain moisture and reduce any fire risk.
Smaller bags make excellent handwarmers and, of course, are lighter to post.0 -
