Since you already have broadband you could consider a VoIP line. The cheapest in terms of actually getting a line is SIPGate (www.sipgate.co.uk) which will give you a free UK landline number in your local area code that you can use to receive calls. There are no charges, although you will have to buy some call credit (pre-pay) if you want to make outgoing calls.
In order to make and receive calls you can use either:- Your computer, running some free software you can download from SIPGate.
- If you have a broadband router, you can also use the following options, which do not require your computer to be switched on:
- Use a standard telephone with an ATA device such as the Linksys PAP2 (these are about £15 bought from abroad on ebay, or about £30 from a UK supplier). You will also need a small plug adapter.
- Use a special IP Telephone, such as this one: https://secure.sipgate.co.uk/voipshop/grandstream/grandstream_bt-101 - prices from about £30
Note that services such as SIPGate are not suitable for genuine emergencies (i.e. when you need to call 999). You should have an alternative means of communication (e.g. a mobile phone) for these emergencies.
You could just go out and buy a cheap mobile phone...Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0
