Dimmer Switches and Energy Saving Lightbulbs

I have dimmer switches in both my lounge and my bedroom. The bedroom light fitting takes bog standard bulbs, the lounge has spotlights.
I was just reading an article on BBC News about how people are bulk buying and hoarding light bulbs because they're being phased out.
I've never used energy saving light bulbs (don't start green brigade - I do my bit and I like the light from old bulbs and the fact they come on instantly). One of the comments on the BBC story said that energy saving light bulbs can't be used with dimmer switches.
Is this true? As and when I can no longer buy regular bulbs, will have to change my dimmer switches? I love the option of having very low light in those rooms.
Also, not having looked into energy saving bulbs, are they being made to fit all light fittings? I have spotlight fittings in most rooms....
