We read a beautiful book in school called 'Walkabout' which was about a brother and sister (both kids) who survived a plane crash in the Australian outback and how they survived the time in the desert.

Yes it did become a film. And I know what you mean about films from books - there is so much depth of character missed out because its difficult to convey thought processes.
