Just a question some might know the answer too .....confuses me why on earth do they make new laptops with the modem socket at the back and then cover it up ? bets me.......maybe its because i am blonde lmao

It's a generic "shell" that's used for lots of different models at different prices and with different features. There's probably a slightly more expensive model that does have a dialup modem built in.

Lots of them are exactly the same hardware, there's just no connector soldered onto the board and it's covered up. It's often more economical to make a million identical laptops and disable features on half of them than it is to make 500,000 with the modem and 500,000 without.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

What did you end up doing?

I'm in a similar situation, trying to assess if mobile broadband would be good. The best deals I could see were vodafone 18 month contract 25 per month, with a 5gb limit and that includes the faster usb modem (I think you have to pay a bit for it, bit it isn't too much). Quidco are offering 90 back on this contract and a free Nokia phone. I'm concerned what Vodafone reception would be like in the likes of Omagh / Fermanagh / Derry direction.

There is a 3 deal on their website, 10 pounds per month, but the maximum speed is ridiculously slow. I think Quidco are offering 80 pounds back on the deal.

I'm wary of signing myself up to somethign that may not work properly after reading some of the problems people have had getting out of the contract etc... so I'm hoping to literally walk into the shop and get them to try it out...

Keen to hear what you do / did!
