European Xmas market recommendations

Options
We are a group of "Golden Girls" looking for ideas for Xmas market destinations in Europe. We really want to fly from Leeds/Bradford so that limits our choice somewhat. Last year we went to Krakow and loved the atmosphere there. I have just found reasonably priced flights to Dusseldorf in December and the on-line Xmas market guide makes it sound a good choice. Has anybody been or can perhaps recommend somewhere else? Many thanks.:xmassmile

I can wholeheartedly recommend Salzburg Christmas market and you even combine the trip with Munich too, which has one of the biggest Christmas markets in Europe.

I agree, Cologne is quite lovely. Seven (I think?!!) markets, five of which are within walking distance of each other, with some lovely shops on the way ... and the most kind and friendly people that you could wish to meet! x
    Gone ... or have I?

    Go to Nürnberg!

The biggest and oldest Christmas market in the whole of Germany!
  • Salzburg would have been one of our choices but there is only one flight a week in winter with Jet2 L/B. I will look into getting to Cologne or Nurnberg from Dusseldorf as I have heard they are both good markets. Thanks.

Manchesters X-mas markets are fabulous. Lots of German log cabins, twinkly lights and giant christmas trees....... and claimed to be the best in Europe!

    Feeling Festive?

For a truly festive experience visit the magical Manchester Christmas Markets.
Considered to be amongst the best in Britain and Europe the markets transform the City with their charming traditional wooden chalets.
You cannot help but get into the Christmas spirit whilst browsing around the bustling stalls, soaking up the unique atmosphere beneath the twinkling lights with the aroma of hot chestnuts filling the air.
Due to their popularity the markets have now expanded to 5 locations in Manchester City Centre.
Every year there are new attractions for visitors to see - the most recent being a 6m high Weihnactspyramide (a giant German Christmas Pyramid with Nativity scene), which sits on top of the German Beer Tent and a magical Alpine House which is traditionally decorated and houses a giant multilingual talking reindeer!

    Travelling to Manchester City Centre

These are the various ways of reaching the markets. We strongly recommend that you use public transport.
Car - There is ample car parking in the city centre area either on the streets (using pay and display) or longer term in surrounding car park facilities.
Bus - Most buses travelling to Manchester city centre stop at Piccadilly Gardens, St Peter's Square, Cross Street or Shudehill Interchange. From all of these locations the market is within walking distance.
Metrolink - There are Metrolink Stations in St Peter's Square or Piccadilly Gardens, both a short walk away from the markets.
Train - Trains to Manchester will arrive at Piccadilly or Victoria Stations, where the Metrolink can be used to get to St Peter's Square or Piccadilly Gardens. Alternatively you can take a short walk to most of our market locations.
