blackrock gold and general

  • just so you all know, I guess being a uni student with long-term working life ahead of me, I can afford to have a high risk profile..

gold fund was half my portfolio and the rest ftse350 shares. ftse shares gained 22% and exited a while ago, so the blackrock gold is now 100%. I am contemplating entering the markets again.

My fund is funded through the weekend job I have. I can afford my studies with gov loan and grants. So, I guess the best would be to keep it til i graduate.

Despite getting a first class in corporate finance module, what I thoroughly realise yet again is just how much there is still to learn !

    thanks all.
  • i think this is a good fund to hold for the long term, not least because of its diversifying properties. it can do well when global equity markets are falling. right now, it's falling because the dollar is rising and consequently the price of gold is dropping. add in the fact that commodities in general have dropped sharply recently, and you have your 29% fall.

i'm definitely holding onto this fund, but i won't let it get to much more than 5% of my portfolio. when it does well i take some profit and invest it in some of the less risky funds i hold.

Even now, gold is up over 20% in the last 12 months.

Can you name anything else that has done better ?
