• 120GB sata hard drive
• 1GB DDR2 667 RAM
• DVD-RW drive
• Microsoft Windows XP Home

I really don't have much clue, technically - I just want to be able to surf the net without it being too slow and wordprocess. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's spec is a bit dated and I'm sure you could do better for the price but to answer your question it should be more than capable for browsing the net and word processing.
Edit: here's a similar laptop from Acer but with only 512mb (which could be upgraded) for only £299

anything with a Intel celeron processor AND only 1GB ram is not much fun
also its got XP home u can do better..The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.0 -

if you are feeling braver call dell and get a better deal they will normally throw in free delivery and maybe an upgrade on one thing (maybe more ram or vista business)
basically they have targets to meet and need to sell..
and yes markymoo probably spent about 5seconds finding that laptop which will be a lot better..The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.0 -
Thank you all for replying - you've all said that I could do better for that price, but what is the reason; what specification should I be looking for. Geewhiz, I've had a look at the laptop on the the website but it's sold out - but I will look at the specification of that one and compare with my post and look for something that is near enough to your suggestion.
Oh and something else - the reason I went for XP, is I already have a computer at home running this and thought it would be better so that I could network them to access the internet (or is this necessary?)0 -

Celeron = relatively low powered processor
2GB RAM pretty much the norm nowadays
120GB is on the low side
XP machines are a bit old hat. Vista has been around a while now.
Also you would buy a (wireless?) router to network them for internet access. It wont matter to it what each O/S each specific machine is running.
We've four machines here. One PC running Vista Business, two laptops running Vista home, one laptop running XP, all through the same wireless router.0 -

Its not that its a bad laptop, just a bad price.
Heres what dell do for £282
Intel Celeron 1.86GHZ
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
Wireless
Vista
15.4 inch widescreen WXGA
DVD Rewriter
£282 Delivered.
Check out their best deals at www.dmxdimension.com - Vostro 1510 is a good starting point.
Also, Dell are unlikely to do any free postage or give big discounts on their promotion machines - it tends to be more likely on custom builds where they have extra profit to play with.0 -
Okay, thanks for explaining everyone - I think I understand a bit more now (can do better than that specification for that price etc). Right...I will continue looking armed with the info that you guys have supplied0
