I agree with barbie babe - give them a call and see what they decide. This happened to me at a very difficult financial time in my life and they were very good about cancelling the charge.

Trouble is, they are not obliged to waive the charge as it is all part of the "deal" with banks (it's one of the ways they make money  ) If you go over any agreed overdraft limit you will be charged.

Give them a call - got to be worth the cost of a call!

I am going to move this thread to the vent board as it isn't specifically about getting out of debt

Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

    newmum1,

If the bank dig their toes in, tell them that the newspapers will happily run an article about Barclays charging £10 for 18p. Or any other bank but that's neither here nor there...

    Ahhhhh Barclays!

I closed my acount with them because total fines from them reached £135 for being............wait for it...................14p overdrawn!

They charged me £15, then when I didn't pay it, another £30, then when I didn't pay that another £30, then 2 more £30's.

So as I was 14p overdrawn (no overdfraft) I just stopeed using the account, wrote them a lovely letter telling them where they could find the £135 and didn't hear from them again.

They are such a BAD bank!

    ;)

You should always dispute any bank charges. There has been an awful lot of negative publicity recently surrounded the extortionate bank charges being applyed and apparently the banks are a bit nervous about it all.

Either telephone or write to them requesting they recredit you the charges made. A lot of banks are giving people their money back as they are worried about even more bad press.

I am not defending high bank charges but: If the T&Cs you have accepted when opening your account stipulate that there is a charge when you go overdrawn, then I am afraid, the bank has the right to charge you.
