Trouble with National Grid/Transco enquiry line for MPRN

I've recently moved into a new flat and was told by the landlord that he thought the previous tenents were with EDF and that I'd receive a utilities bill soon (mind you, he also said the BT line had been left active and yet I'm having to pay £112 to get an engineer to re-active it - so much for that...). However, it's been over 3 weeks and no contact from any utilities company, so I tried calling the Transco/National Grid line to find out my gas supplier. It's completely automated and doesn't seem to undertstand a single word I say! Didn't think my accent was quite so unintelligible.

Is there any other way of contacting them to find out my gas supplier? I've done some web searching, but it just keeps throwing the same number back at me.

I had issues with the line, if you mess up the recordings, then keep hanging on, or just say help you should be able to get through to speak to an actual person.
