Travel tickets - Day rtn vs single

Can anyone tell me why it is cheaper to buy a day return on e.g. eurotunnel, ferries etc than a single/3 day rtn? Is there anything to stop people buying 2 day return tickets (and only use one part of each) instead of a 3 day rtn as its cheaper?

Commercial reasons: most people are willing to pay more for a longer break than for just a day away.
And read the T and Cs on the booking site: they have got your credit card details and say that they will take more money if you buy a day return and don't come back, and by buying the ticket you agree to this.0
