Quite!... and by the time you "drive up a road for a while", you've missed the best option.

If you want to avoid just driving up the road or would like to have more input to an alternative Tomtom has a few handy buttons. Press "find alternative" and you can "avoid road block". This takes you off the planned route for 100 yards, or up to 3 miles and is good for going round traffic jams. Or you could just plan a new route, perhaps avoiding motorways (I quite like that one).

Both these option show a map of the suggested alternative route, you can take it or try another.

If you are running tomtom on a phone you get a free trial of Tomtom traffic, this checks your route against live traffic data and offers routes around jams.
Its fun but I did not go on to subscribe.

I didn't realise that you could get free updates, I thought you had to pay for them. I've been onto the TomTom site and I can't work out where these are or how to go about updating it. Can anyone advise? (Earlier this year when I went to Cornwall I found some of the new roads were not like on my TomTom.)

Also how do I work out which version I have of TomTom One. When I tap the bottom right hand screen it says "GPS V.1.21". Does this mean I have Version 1 of TomTom One? It does not say anything on the unit itself. I threw away the original box. Thanks.

You need to install TomTom Home it is on the disk that comes with your tomtom the latest version is available on the website here.

They give a 30 day map garantee after purchase so you can get the latest maps.

This is how you check out which version you are running. Im running map v720.1802 which was released a few months ago, if your running an older map then expect to be sent the wrong way where the roads have changed its not the devices fault.

...in TomTom, you have to go into the menu selections, inevitably while driving, while Garmin starts afresh automatically when it realises you've gone off route. TomTom doesn't (least my versions don't). TomTom tries to return you to the original route. You have to fiddle with the options - after you've pulled over to do so...Yeah! Right!

Mind you, things are moving so fast - my Streetpilot C510's are already discontinued. Some-one has already pointed out that Garmin units now do support multiple "via" waypoints.

Don't get me wrong, I think all GPS units are brilliant and, like watches providing time info, a GPS gives us the info about where we are in the world like a watch lets us know the time of day. I'd be lost without mine (groan)!

If I could only keep one of the 5 GPS units we have (3 really cos the wife's TomTom in her Ipaq PPC is the same as mine and 2 are identical Garmin Streetpilots), it would be the Garmin eTrex Cx because it does all the stuff the others do in a diddy handheld unit inc Streetcams across Europe.

It says I have got "App. 7.163". What version of TomTom One does that mean? The code is different to the map code. I'm confused.

No satnav can be trusted 100%, but i would go for the TOMTOM as never failed us and if theirs something wrong anyone in the world can change the map which then goes to TOMTOM they check that its correct and then send an update to it. Its called Mapshare i think.
  • im trying to find free up dates for my tomtom one - its about a year old - keeps missing new roundabouts and roads etc!
Any suggestions for how to update the maps for free gratefully received
    thanks:j

Went to Halfords, they were extremely helpful, to the point of letting you try one in your car.
My instinct told me go for a Tom Tom,but in the end i went for a Garmin, they seemed much 'quicker' in refreshing, they are also more reliable(according to Halfords)with an excellent after sales, plus the points mentioned by others on here are true, you dont suss these niggles till you have had one a while!

I bought the Garmin 250w on special offer, worth every penny and lasts over 4.5 hours!( paid £133 inc shipping) 15 day trial
    # 2 YEAR GUARENTEE # from PIXMANIA.

Extras are a reasonable price, OR you can...

Buy the extras ie mains adapter and case for as little as £5
each on Amazon or Ebay. dont pay £19 from a retailer-that is their mark up

The extra 'traffic master'feature is NOT really worth the £50 UNLESS you live in a very good fm signal area plus you have to trail an aerial lead on the windscreen.

Keep the brightness and volume down, you will get alot more minutes out of your battery! Update software often

If you can afford it go for the widescreen sat navs especially if you wear specs ! Just so much easier to read in a hurry

    Hope all that helps someone!!
never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow
