when i worked in retail we used to do this all the time. we want the customer happy first.
  • I work for M&S at the Customer Service Desk - we have a policy against what is known as "Buy-Back", which is basically what you are wanting to do - people try it quite often, buying something before the sale and then finding it has reduced drastically and wanting the difference back.

Sadly, it's just one of those things that is annoying. What customers may not realise is that although the item goes down in price, it's very unlikely sometimes that you would find your size and exact same item in the sale - because if it's a popular item, it would never make it in to the Sale in the first place.

We tell our customers they can not "Buy-Back" but they are free to wait for us to reprocess the item (ensure it is priced, labelled correctly etc.) and when it is reprocessed on to the shop floor, they can buy it then. We sometimes have customers literally waiting around for it to appear.

No idea what the legal point of view on this is, but if we let everyone "buy-back", the company would never make money! (Well it would, but not as much!)

I bought a pair of white jeans at full price - £19.50 in size 12 two weeks ago. Noticed that other sizes were marked down to £9.00 just 7 days later. I therefore returned my jeans with the receipt and got a full refund. I was too embarrassed to ask to re-buy them. I returned to M&S the next afternoon and luckily there were on rail waiting to be put out on the shop floor so re-bought them at sale price.
