At present running two pc's wired BB. downstairs PC has died, wife wants a laptop, wireless!
Can I leave the upstairs PC as it is, wired and then have laptop wireless?
Would I just buy a wireless router and connect it to my router so the upstairs stays the same and the laptop would be ok wireless.
Can my cable modum run two routers in line.?
Is there a one wired and one wireless router?

And finally is 'Bigpockets' OK for refurb laptops?

You would buy a wireless router and use it to replace the existing wired router as the wireless router will have portsd for wired connections as well. Just make sure you get the right sort depending on if you are on ADSL or Cable.

Bigpockets are oK but I'd have a good look around before buying a refurb laptop. There are some good deals on new ones at the moment. There wass one in Woolworths recently that worked out at around £220 with vouchers and cashback.

There was a code to use with the above to bring it to £225 and then Quidco or similar lopped a few more pounds off.

  • Make sure that the laptop you buy comes with wifi, if not, get hold of a wifi card (Belkin make some). The card should slot into the side of your machine. As said by the gentleman above, a wifi router should have ports for you to plug your network cable into.

    Essentially nothing, they're used interchangeably.

Wi-Fi was term developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance whioch is a group of manufacturers of wireless networking kit. So really it is a marketing term, but anything old as being "Wi-Fi" should connect to anything else badged as "Wi-FI".
