When you apply to switch suppliers your give 14 days cooling oof period in which you can cancel, once that 14 days has expire your new supplier contacts your old supplier to advise you are leaving them (this will be when your old supplier trys to keep you by mail and phone calls) Then roughly 5 days before you account transfer acorss you will be asked for a meter reading which will be your start and end reading, if your payin by D.D you last payment will have come out from your old supplier, and your new supplier will send the reading to your old supplier and this means there is no overlap on your bills so you only pay one supplier for your usage, The only problem that can occur is if you have a debt with the supplier your leaving they will once the final reads are recieved inssue you with your final bill (normally if your D.D covers your usage you wont have much of a final bill if anything, And your new D.D will start from your selected date,
Alternatively if you pay quarterly you will get your final bill for the last quarter upto your transfer date in accordance with the last meter reads, and then your new supplier starts to bill you quarterly
hope this helps0
